On Monday, Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, acknowledged his stance of not seeking any position within the Opposition’s alliance, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.)- “I only want to unite the parties”.
In Patna, while accompanied by his deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, Kumar asserted that he has consistently conveyed his lack of ambition for such roles to the public. He highlighted his objective of bringing various factions together rather than pursuing personal aspirations.

Someone else will be appointed as convener.] When questioned about the possibility of assuming the role of convener in the upcoming Mumbai meeting of the INDIA alliance, the Chief Minister of Bihar stated that his sole objective is to unite the parties.

Opposition coalition
Amidst the intensifying preparations for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the focus is on the opposition coalition’s assembly in Mumbai, known as I.N.D.I.A., where pivotal discussions are anticipated. This gathering is slated to unveil the coalition’s logo and deliberate on strategic concerns, including seat-sharing arrangements. Moreover, speculation is rife about the potential expansion of the 26-party opposition alliance, with additional regional groups contemplating joining forces in Mumbai. Prominent leaders from opposition circles are set to convene for a two-day conclave commencing on August 31 in Maharashtra’s capital, Mumbai, a region currently under the governance of the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition.

The precursor to this meeting occurred in Patna in June, followed by another gathering in Bengaluru in mid-July. The Bengaluru meeting bore the outcome of the coalition’s name I.N.D.I.A. signifying its unity against the BJP. In light of the impending Mumbai conclave, Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar announced that several more political parties are inclined to join the opposition coalition. While the specifics of these potential entrants were withheld, Kumar indicated that the gathering would deliberate on critical aspects such as seat-sharing arrangements.
Nitish Kumar Prioritizes United Front
In Patna, Nitish Kumar addressed and emphasized the strategic discussions scheduled for the Mumbai meeting. He highlighted the significance of finalizing agendas like seat-sharing and other critical matters. Kumar expressed his intention to unite as many parties as possible before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, prioritizing collective strength over personal gain.
Expansion Plans for INDIA Alliance
Sanjay Raut, a leader of the Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction, speculated that new political parties, particularly from northeastern India, might participate in the Mumbai meeting. Notable figures from the INDIA alliance, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and MPs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, are set to take part in the conclave. Raut indicated that the gathering would unveil the alliance’s logo, which aims to symbolize unity, energy, and the essence of the country.
Congress leader Milind Deora noted that seat-sharing arrangements among alliance partners are largely solidified in many states, with a few states requiring further deliberation. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress, has established various committees to meticulously plan different facets of the upcoming opposition bloc meeting.
The convergence of opposition forces underscores the evolving dynamics as political parties unite with the shared objective of shaping the upcoming electoral landscape in India.
